SEO for Moving Companies: The 2026 Playbook
Moving SEO is local SEO. The searches that book moves are "movers near me", "[city] movers" and "long distance movers in [city]", and they are won in the map results and on pages that prove you actually work there. Here is what matters, in the order it pays off.

How do moving companies rank higher on Google?
Complete and keep up your Google Business Profile, earn a steady stream of real reviews, publish a fast website with one useful page per service and city you serve, keep your name, address and phone number identical everywhere, and earn links from local and industry sites. Do those consistently for six to twelve months and rankings follow.
1. Google Business Profile comes first
For local moving searches, the map results sit above the regular results and take most of the clicks. Your Google Business Profile decides whether you show there.
- Pick the most accurate primary category (for example "Moving company" or "Mover") and add real secondary ones such as "Moving and storage service".
- Set your service area to the places you actually serve.
- Upload real photos of your crews, trucks and warehouse, and keep adding them.
- Answer every review, good and bad, within a day or two.
- Post updates and offers; keep hours accurate, including holidays.
- Use a tracking number as the primary number and your main line as the additional one, so calls stay attributed without breaking your listing.
2. Reviews are a ranking factor and a closing tool
Review count, recency and rating all affect where you show in the map, and customers read them before they call. The movers at the top of the map usually ask every customer, every time. The reviews guide covers how to do that without breaking Google's rules.
3. One page per service and per city you serve
Google ranks pages, not websites. A single "Services" page can't rank for local moving, long-distance moving, packing, storage and commercial moves in six cities. Build a page for each service, and a page for each city or area you genuinely serve.
City pages only work when they are real: name the neighborhoods, the buildings with tricky elevators, the parking rules, your local reviews and photos from jobs there. Copy-and-paste pages with the city name swapped do more harm than good.
- Local moving, long-distance moving, packing, storage, commercial and specialty (pianos, safes) each get a page.
- Each city page has its own photos, reviews, FAQs and a clear way to get a quote.
- Put your phone number and quote button at the top of every page, on mobile too.
- Link pages to each other: city pages to service pages and back.
4. Speed, mobile and the technical basics
- Most moving searches happen on phones. Test your site on one: does it load in a couple of seconds, and can someone call you with one tap?
- Compress images; don't make a slideshow the first thing a phone has to load.
- Give every page a unique title and description that says the service and the place.
- Add LocalBusiness (MovingCompany) structured data with your name, address, phone and hours.
- Make sure your quote form works on mobile and sends leads somewhere someone answers.
- Check Google Search Console monthly for pages that aren't indexed, and fix them.
5. Citations: the same name, address and phone everywhere
Directories and industry listings (Yelp, BBB, Angi, the Chamber of Commerce, state and national moving associations) confirm to Google that you are a real business in the place you say. The details must match your Google Business Profile exactly. A move, a rebrand or an old number left on a dozen directories quietly hurts your rankings.
6. Earn local and industry links
- Sponsor local teams, charity drives and events, and get listed on their sites.
- Partner with realtors, apartment communities and storage facilities that link to trusted movers.
- Join your state moving association and the national association; member directories link to you.
- Publish genuinely useful guides (moving checklists, a local moving-day parking guide) that other sites want to point to.
- Get featured in local news for community work, like donating moves or food drives.
7. AI search and "AI SEO for movers"
Google's AI Overviews and assistants like ChatGPT answer many questions before anyone clicks. They pull from pages that answer clearly, list real facts (service area, pricing approach, licensing, insurance) and are backed by reviews and mentions elsewhere. The same basics win: clear answers near the top of the page, an FAQ section, structured data, and a reputation that shows up in more than one place.
Watch out for anyone selling "AI SEO" that means mass-produced city pages. Thin, duplicated pages are exactly what Google's spam policies target.
8. Measure what SEO books, not just traffic
Rankings and visits are a means to an end. Track calls and form leads from organic search and your Google Business Profile, then the moves and revenue they turned into. A page that ranks first and books nothing needs a better offer, not more SEO.
MoveitPro+ puts the lead source on every booked job and gives each listing its own tracking number, so you can see which pages and listings actually book moves.
